A developer and tester for UAE businesses, working from India

The UAE is the closest international market to India in every sense that matters to a project: ninety minutes of time difference, a shared working week, and a business culture already used to working with Indian engineering teams. In practice this runs like a local engagement.

Working together

Hours, money, and the law

The three things that decide whether hiring across a border works.

Ninety minutes apart, so effectively the same day

India is UTC+5:30 and the UAE is UTC+4 — a difference of an hour and a half, and no daylight saving on either side to complicate it. My 11:30am is your 10am. There is no overlap window to negotiate because the entire working day overlaps, which means same-day turnarounds, a call whenever something needs one, and none of the overnight lag that shapes US engagements.

AED or USD, whichever your accounts prefer

Invoices are issued in AED or USD, paid by bank transfer or Wise. UAE VAT at 5% is generally not charged on my invoice, since I am supplying from outside the UAE; whether your business self-accounts under the reverse charge depends on your registration, and your accountant should confirm it. No Indian GST applies to an export of services. For businesses in the free zones, I can invoice the free-zone entity directly if that is how your accounts are structured.

Federal data-protection law, and where the data sits

The UAE's Federal Decree-Law No. 45 of 2021 on personal data protection follows broadly the same shape as GDPR: a lawful basis, minimisation, retention limits and data-subject rights. Free zones such as the DIFC and ADGM have their own regimes on top, and they are stricter — if you are registered in either, that is the standard the build is designed to. Where the data physically sits matters to some UAE clients for procurement reasons, so hosting region is a decision made at the start rather than a default accepted silently.

Common briefs in United Arab Emirates

What clients here usually need

Bilingual and RTL-ready builds

Arabic alongside English is a common requirement, and right-to-left is a layout decision rather than a translation one. Getting it wrong means rebuilding the interface, so it is settled before design starts.

Trading, logistics and inventory systems

The UAE's re-export economy runs on stock, quotes and documentation. This is the same category of system as the ERP and operations work in the portfolio.

WhatsApp as the primary sales channel

WhatsApp Business API integration is more central here than in most markets — for many UAE businesses it is the main way customers actually make contact, not a secondary one.

Questions from UAE clients

The ones that come up before a first call.

I build the application to support it properly — right-to-left layout, correct fonts, locale-aware dates and numbers, and a content structure that holds both languages without duplicating the site. The Arabic copy itself should come from a native speaker or a professional translator; I will not machine-translate a business's own words and present it as finished work. Give me the translations and they drop straight in.

Generally no, because the supply comes from outside the UAE. Depending on your registration you may need to self-account under the reverse charge. This is a general description rather than tax advice, so confirm it with your accountant — but no Indian GST is added either way on an export of services.

Not routinely — this is a remote practice and pricing reflects that. For a large engagement a trip is possible and would be quoted separately. In practice the 90-minute time difference means video calls cover almost everything an in-person meeting would, which is why most UAE clients stop asking after the first month.

Same working day for most things, because there is no overnight gap to absorb. A bug reported at 10am your time is usually looked at before lunch. That responsiveness is the main practical advantage the UAE has over the US and UK markets on this site.
