A developer and tester for Singapore businesses, from India

Singapore is the easiest Asian market to work with from India and one of the most demanding on standards. The time difference is small enough to be irrelevant, and the expectations around data handling and documentation are closer to the UK than to the rest of the region.

Working together

Hours, money, and the law

The three things that decide whether hiring across a border works.

Two and a half hours, so the day is effectively shared

India is UTC+5:30 and Singapore is UTC+8, a difference of two and a half hours with no daylight saving on either side. My 9:30am is your noon; my 6pm is your 8:30pm. There is no overlap window to negotiate because most of the working day already overlaps, which means same-day turnarounds and a call whenever one is needed rather than a scheduled slot.

SGD or USD, and GST you account for yourself

Invoices are issued in SGD or USD, paid by bank transfer or Wise. Services imported from an overseas supplier generally fall under Singapore's reverse charge, so nothing is added to my invoice and a GST-registered business self-accounts on its own return. There is no Indian GST on an export of services. Your finance team will usually want the invoice to state the supplier's country and the nature of the service explicitly, and it does.

PDPA, and the obligations that come with a breach

The Personal Data Protection Act governs collection, use and disclosure, and its notification obligation means a breach of a certain severity has to be reported to the PDPC and to affected individuals. As with Australia, that changes engineering decisions rather than just paperwork: a system that logs more than it needs is a larger disclosure the day something goes wrong. Builds for Singapore clients collect less by default, enforce retention in the database rather than by policy, and keep a written record of what is stored where. Where a data-hosting region matters for your own compliance posture, that is decided at the start.

Common briefs in Singapore

What clients here usually need

B2B and professional services

Consultancies, fund and legal services, and trading firms needing a site that reads as institutional rather than promotional. Credibility, clarity and documentation over visual novelty.

Regional operations dashboards

Singapore is frequently the head office for operations run across several countries. That is the ERP and dashboard category in the portfolio - multi-entity, multi-currency, with roles and permissions that hold.

Independent QA on an existing product

Engineering salaries here make a dedicated QA hire expensive at small scale. An automated suite running in your pipeline buys much of the same release confidence for a fraction of it.

Questions from Singapore clients

The ones that come up before a first call.

No. As an overseas supplier I do not charge it; a GST-registered Singapore business generally self-accounts under the reverse charge on its own return. There is no Indian GST on an export of services either. Treat this as a general description rather than tax advice and have your accountant confirm it against your registration.

Yes, and for some Singapore clients it is worth doing. Both the application and the database can sit in a Singapore region, which helps latency for regional users and simplifies conversations about where personal data resides. It is a decision worth taking at the start - moving a production database between regions later is disruptive in a way that choosing correctly on day one is not.

Much like a colleague two and a half hours behind you. Written updates and a shared repository carry most of it, with a call whenever something genuinely needs discussing rather than a fixed weekly ritual. Because the overlap is so large, questions asked during your morning are almost always answered before you finish for the day.

You own it on payment, written into the agreement rather than assumed, with the repository under your organisation's account from the first commit. A mutual NDA before anything sensitive is shared is standard. I am comfortable working under Singapore law and jurisdiction for engagements of this size, or under your own MSA if you have one.
